SMISHING SCAM

It is a kind of scam centered into mobile phone by tricking the owner of the phone to reveal personal information. He will receive a text message asking him to register to an online dating service and at the same time put a virus into his mobile phone.

There are other messages whose only intention is to extract credit card number of mobile phone users. There are other techniques they employed by downloading a mobile spyware to the phone users to hear any conversation emanated from phone users and the person he called.

Other technique they employed is to send text messages to cellphone users pretending to come from a legitimate source like a bank or other financial institution. They will convince users to click on a link in the internet connection of the phone by calling a certain phone number. The purpose is to gather personal information using the bank's name where the user has an account. The link and the phone they mentioned are fraudulent and its connection lead to identity theft.

Once this personal information is taken from the users, he can no longer recover whatever money he lost in his account.

For you, how can you protect from this kind of fraud?

-Ignore any unsolicited request for your personal information especially your bank account that they send through a text message in your cellphone.Remember the words, "Confirm. Verify, Update". Once you erroneously take this words by answering, everything will goes wrong and you will be a loser.

-Do not believe that such information is coming from your bank about your account. It is best to visit your bank and ask them of the message you received to validate your suspicion. Banks never ask this information through text messages or telephone call. They may call to let you visit them but not for other reasons by asking sensitive information about your account.

-If they give you a link in your cellphone by a text message, beware! If you don't know the person who communicated to you, disregard him completely.

-For your added security, put a password on all your banking account. Check your bank statement of any irregularities of withdrawal. If it happened, request the bank to freeze your account from further unknown withdrawal. This is to give you time to open a new account and transfer whatever money left in your account.
